Staying safe at home

House fires claim the lives of over 500 people each year, with the majority of fatalities occurring between midnight and 6am, when people are asleep and when people are out of home in the daytime. When you are asleep your sense of smell decreases to almost non-existent.

Most Nigerians are much less concern about dangers of fire, even when they spent millions of naira building their dream house. When they can protect their house from fire disaster, with proper fire safety design. We all know that Nigerian Fire Brigade is not reliable, because of lack of adequate equipment. People living in home without a smoke detector, are twice likely to be killed by fire, should one occur in that home.

Smoke alarms detect smoke at the earliest stages of fire, giving you vital extra time to escape. Ensuring you have a working smoke alarm fitted is an important precaution to protect your home and family from fire.

 

The facts about fire

*  There are about 59,0001 house fires a year in the Nigeria, the majority of which are caused by electrical equipment misuse, mainly cooking appliances.

*  Smoke alarms give you advance warning of fire, which results in giving you more time to react. Having a working smoke alarm has been associated with lower casualty rates and reduced damage to your home.

*  With a working smoke alarm, you are 4 times more likely to survive.

Smoke is dark

Smoke generated by house fires is thick, dense and dark – making it difficult to find your way to safety. You can’t see your own hand at the end of your own arm during a fire! Rubber, plastic, wood upholstery, foam-filling and fabric are the kinds of household materials that fuel house fires.

Smoke is fast

Your home can be consumed by flames in less than four minutes. Small fires can get out of control in less than 30 seconds – time is not on your side. Make sure that every member of the family knows that speed is of the essence in escaping a house fire. Closing doors can delay the spread of a fire – but don’t investigate, just get out fast. Every household should have a practiced escape plan.

Heat

Heat from a fire can kill you without being burnt by the flames. The difference between the temperature at head height and floor level can mean the difference between life and death Temperatures five feet from the floor can be 600°F whilst at floor level temperatures may only be 90°F.

Which type of smoke alarm?

There are two different technologies used in domestic smoke alarms: Ionisation and Photoelectric (also known as optical). Both are effective at detecting smoke, yet each has a unique detecting system.

What else do I need to be fully protected?

Smoke alarms provide your first line of defence. The following fire safety products can offer additional protection:

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless deadly gas. Because you can't see, taste, or smell it, carbon monoxide can kill you before you know it's there. Everyone is at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning. The great danger of carbon monoxide is its attraction to haemoglobin in the bloodstream. When breathed in, carbon monoxide replaces the oxygen which cells need to function. When CO is present in the air, it rapidly accumulates in the blood, causing symptoms similar to the flu, such as headaches, fatigue, nausea, dizzy spells, confusion, and irritability. As levels increase, vomiting, loss of consciousness, and eventually brain damage or death can

result.

How can I protect myself and my family from carbon monoxide poisoning?

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends installing at least one carbon monoxide detector per household, near the sleeping area. Additional detectors on every level of a home and in every bedroom provide extra protection.

Your home fire prevention system will be integrated to your home surveillance app, this will allow you to receive alert on your device anywhere you are, even when you are out of your home. This app will tell you exact location where there is fire incident. Your home fire system will also be monitor by your Onsite monitoring room and Central surveillance monitoring centre.

This is one of the most popular gathering places in most people’s homes. Having a panic button in the kitchen is highly advisable for a number of reasons.

Firstly, in the event that you have an accident while cooking and you need to quickly call for assistance, the panic button is right there. Secondly, the kitchen is where people often run to when calling for help because the landline is most often installed there. It doesn’t hurt to have a panic button in one of the most central locations of the house.
